Bangor’s Fair Trade Groups Inspiring Local Schools

April 1, 2025
Image shows lots of drawings created by students of what they think about Fair Trade. Pictures are on a brown classroom table with a blue carpet and blue school chairs in the background. Many children have used the Fair Trade logo in their artwork, which is a blue, green, black and white in a circle.

Bangor University’s ‘Go Fairtrade’ students’ society and Bangor’s local Fair Trade group have been actively spreading the Fair Trade message in nearby schools. Their efforts have helped raise awareness and inspire young people to get involved.

Bringing Fair Trade to the Classroom

The volunteers visited four schools in total, with two more sessions already planned. These interactive sessions covered what Fair Trade is, why it matters, and its efforts against deforestation – with a special focus on Fairtrade chocolate! Pupils were encouraged to express their learning through creative artwork, producing posters and drawings that reflected their understanding of Fair Trade values.

A Lasting Impact

The outreach efforts are already showing results! One Anglesey school hosted a Fair Trade Day, where pupils had the chance to buy Fairtrade products for £1, helping them renew their Fairtrade School status. Another school involved, previously Fairtrade-certified, has been inspired to reapply for Fairtrade status following the visit.

Positive Feedback

The schools have been highly appreciative of these visits, with teachers and pupils alike engaging enthusiastically in discussions about ethical trade and sustainability.

Bangor’s local Fair Trade group and student volunteers continue to show that small actions can create big change.
