What do geography, Fairtrade bananas and a room full of competitive quizzers have in common? On the evening of January 28th, they all came together for the Big Barry Fairtrade Quiz at Craft Republic on the Waterfront.
Organised by Barry Town Council and supported by Fair Trade Wales, the Mayor’s annual quiz welcomed over 60 people for a lively night of head-scratching questions. Alongside the quiz rounds, participants were challenged with Fairtrade-themed questions which sparked conversation about ethical trade.
Fairtrade information was available on tables throughout the evening, and winners didn’t just take home bragging rights – Fairtrade prizes were awarded to both quiz and raffle winners.
Thanks to the generosity of everyone who took part, the event raised an impressive £500 for the Mayor of Barry’s Charity Appeal, supporting Mind in the Vale of Glamorgan and Valeways.
The quiz was hosted by Cllr Nic Hodges, with Mayor of Barry, Cllr Dennis Clarke, highlighting just how much people learned on the night:
“Some people will have known that Wales became the world’s first Fairtrade nation in 2008, but I don’t think many knew that Switzerland consumes the most Fairtrade bananas!”
We were delighted to support this event with the Fair Trade Wales grants scheme, helping to bring Fair Trade into the heart of a community evening. A huge thank you to Barry Town Council, Craft Republic for hosting, and everyone who came along and proved that Fair Trade knowledge can be quiz-night gold!
