Monmouthshire has made history! Thanks to the dedication of local primary school pupils and an initiative with Size of Wales, Monmouthshire County Council has officially become Wales’ first Deforestation Free Champion Council.

What is a Deforestation Free Champion Council?

This milestone follows extensive work by pupils from Monmouthshire, who have been investigating how their everyday choices – especially school meals – can contribute to tropical deforestation. Their research and advocacy have led to Monmouthshire taking a stand against deforestation and committing to more sustainable procurement policies.

Why Does This Matter to Fair Trade?

Deforestation is a critical global issue, and by sourcing deforestation-free alternatives, Monmouthshire is not only helping to protect forests but is also supporting farmers and workers who are producing ethically and sustainably. Fair Trade values ethical sourcing, environmental protection, and seeing Welsh communities thrive with these sustainable alternatives!
