A new Fair Trade business to watch in Ceredigion
May 7, 2026
If you’re in the market for a new rug, a special shop has opened at Cardigan Guildhall that’s well worth a visit.
Warp and Weft was founded by Chantel Mathias from Newport, Pembrokeshire, after she struggled to find a suitable rug locally for her grandson’s bedroom. Rather than buying online, she decided to create something better – a dedicated rug shop offering a beautiful selection of ethically produced rugs in a wonderful variety of colours, sizes and materials.
All rugs are woven from natural materials – wool, cotton and jute – with many made from recycled fibres too. Warp and Weft uses only Fairtrade and Goodweave certified suppliers, meaning no child labour has been used in production, and that artisans are paid fairly for their work.

Chantel has recently been expanding her range too. She now stocks sisal rugs from Ghana through a new UK-based Fairtrade supplier supporting local artisans, as well as yoga rugs made with recycled sari bags – a wonderful combination of sustainability and tradition.
And there’s exciting news – Warp and Weft has just moved into a double unit at Cardigan Guildhall Market (Shops 15 and 16, on the lower floor), meaning Chantel can now stock large and extra large rugs too!
Warp and Weft is open 10am-4pm from Monday to Tuesday, and Thursday to Saturday. For more information, visit https://rugs.wales or follow @rugs.wales on Instagram and Facebook.
