A brilliant Fairtrade Fortnight 2024
October 7, 2024
Fairtrade Fortnight 2024 was a huge success
What a wonderful Fairtrade Fortnight 2024! Thank you to everyone who got involved with this year’s celebrations, from schools, community groups, and Members of the Senedd. Here is a snapshot of some of the exciting events that happened in Wales to promote Fair Trade and celebrate 30 years of the Fairtrade mark.
Celebration, Cake and Community
Our theme this year was ‘Be the Change’ by picking up Fairtrade products and speaking up for fairer trade. What better way of doing that than an Ethical Market in the heart of Splott at the Oasis Centre?
Our market had ethical and Fairtrade stalls, a cafe area, food and entertainment for all. Global Eats provided delicious middle eastern food, Conscious Coffee served up ethical hot and cold drinks and we had badge making, a book swap and an embroidery workshop with Ophelia Dos Santos.
We sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to Fairtrade while Jenipher of Jenipher’s Coffi cut the tasty Fairtrade chocolate cake and blew out the candles to celebrate a successful event.

Senedd Members say yes to Fairtrade

We also had a successful engagement day at the Senedd interacting with Members of the Senedd on all things Fairtrade. They loved meeting Jenipher of Jenipher’s Coffi again and the First Minister, Eluned Morgan, made a written statement that day, to support Fairtrade Fortnight and to announce the new Fair Trade Nation criteria for Wales. She said:
In 2008, Wales became the world’s first Fair Trade Nation, and I am proud that the Welsh Government continues to support fair trade practices and ethical consumption. Fairtrade supports producers around the globe in protecting the future of some of our most loved food, products and the planet.
This year, Fairtrade Fortnight will take place between 09 September to 22 September marking 30 years anniversary of Fairtrade Fortnight, with the theme of ‘Be the change’

Dinas Powys Fairtrade saw their Fairtrade banana suit go on an adventure yesterday with some parents after the St Joseph RC School’s Fairtrade coffee morning.
Abergavenny Fairtrade Forum held a series of events around the town including a themed coffee morning and stall at the Abergavenny Food Festival with support from Abergavenny Town Council.
Monmouthshire Fair Trade Group took Jenipher to meet pupils from schools across the county, she talked about the importance of Fairtrade.
Cllr Tudor Griffiths, Chepstow Town Mayor, celebrated Fairtrade Fortnight by grabbing a Fairtrade banana from the ‘banana trees’ in Chepstow and Bulwark with the Chepstow Fair Trade group.
Fair Trade in Football: Stepaside Community Primary School joined Kilgetty AFC recently for the Kilgetty Centenary Fair Trade Cup. 34 Stepaside CP pupils walked down with their teachers to Kilgetty AFC to play football with Kilgetty Under 8s, Under 9s Mixed Teams and Kilgetty Under 9s and 11s Girls.
