How you can Be The Change for Fairtrade Fortnight 2024

September 9, 2024

Fairtrade Fortnight 2024 focuses on the theme of urging people to ‘Be the Change’ – by picking up Fairtrade products and speaking up for fairer trade.

2024 is also Fairtrade’s 30th birthday, a celebration of how the Fairtrade mark is a leader of life-changing impact for farmers and workers across the world. 30 years of Fairtrade sales have meant over £1.7 billion in Fairtrade Premium, which directly supports the farmers and producers of goods we consume everyday.

Fair Trade Wales is celebrating Fairtrade Fortnight by holding a free Ethical Market on September 21st, 10am – 2pm at the Oasis Centre in Splott, Cardiff. Attendees can enjoy ethical and Fairtrade stalls, food, drinks and entertainment for all the family.

Activities include a drop in embroidery workshop, badge making, puzzles and a chance to win prizes too. Also, we’ll sing Happy Birthday to Fairtrade and eat some cake and brownies.

Cardiff loves Fairtrade

YouGov research found that 83% of people in Cardiff have bought a Fairtrade product over the last year. The most popular Fairtrade product bought by Cardiff residents was chocolate, with 56% of people opting for Fairtrade chocolate, followed by bananas at 46%.

Jenipher Sambazi, a Fairtrade coffee producer from Uganda will be at the event sharing her story. Jenipher’s Coffi, is roasted by Ferraris in Wales and available to buy across Wales. Her coffee will be served at the event and you can buy bags of it to take home.

Sarah Stone, Head of Fair Trade Wales said: “We are delighted to be celebrating 30 years of the Fairtrade mark during Fairtrade Fortnight. Fairtrade groups across Wales have campaigned tirelessly in their local communities to raise awareness of Fairtrade and what can be done to support, grow and promote the movement.

You can ‘Be the Change’ by attending our event and know that each time you choose Fairtrade when you shop, you are acting in solidarity with farmers who grow your food.”

Jenipher Sambazi, Vice-Chair of the Mt Elgon Agroforestry Communities Cooperative said: “I look forward to visiting Wales again and sharing my story. I have a strong connection with the people of Wales – they enjoy our high-quality coffee and they are happy to support us through Fairtrade”.

Events for Fairtrade Fortnight are happening all across Wales and you can be part of them.
