An exciting new event, with big Fair Trade names!

Ahead of Fairtrade Fortnight 2023, we are taking a closer look at storytelling and discussing the ethics of promotion in the Fair Trade movement.

We will be joined by Liberation Foods, Shared Interest, and Transform Trade. Each organisation will discuss how they tell their stories and how Fairtrade storytelling has changed in recent years. The panel discussion will be facilitated by Lenshina Hines, Chair, BAFTS UK and co-founder, Fair and Fabulous. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions.

Many people will have heard of Fair Trade coffee and bananas, but don’t realise that its official definition is that ‘Fair Trade is a trading partnership, based on dialogue, transparency and respect, that seeks greater equity in international trade’. Fair Trade systems focus on rebalancing supply chains and ensuring equity and voice for producers. There is still always more that the Fair Trade movement can do to focus on and promote anti-racism. In the past few years, many Fair Trade Organisations have been going on journeys to become more partner-led.

Hear from several Fair Trade Organisations on recent shifts in how they communicate their work to a UK audience and how some of their approaches link to Hub Cymru Africa’s Anti-Racism Charter point 8: “We will adopt appropriate and thoughtful language, storytelling and images. We recognise that they have meaning, can cause harm and can reinforce racism”.

Fairtrade Fortnight runs 27 February – 12 March 2023, if you are thinking about how you can tell your Fair Trade stories, this event is for you! You’ll get to hear from some big Fair Trade names and also get the opportunity to ask your questions.
